How do you address bad hygiene at work?

The Nice Advice by Leah Albert
Dear Leah,
I’ve got an issue that requires some attention: personal hygiene at the workplace. More specifically, I have a stinky co-worker. He’s a very beard, skinny jean, hipster kind of guy. I can’t say for sure, but I suspect the black-framed glasses he wears are just for show.
Is body odor a hipster thing? We work in a small office, and I’m not the only one who notices the smells that waft out of his cubicle. What’s even worse is that he sits near the breakroom. Every time I go by to make my lunch I gag a little and lose my appetite.
How do I approach this co-worker about his hygiene without being mean? He’s a great guy. He’s just… smelly.
Thanks! Funky Monkey
Hi Funky,
Personal hygiene is a sensitive issue. Especially when the hygiene in question isn’t your own! I have a couple of ideas for you.
I’ve heard of people leaving anonymous letters on their colleague’s desk. I’m not a huge fan of this idea. Yes, it will spare you the embarrassment of actually talking to him about it, but can you imagine the anxiety he will feel not knowing who left the note?
Are you close to your co-worker? Do you feel like you could approach him privately and express your concern? If you can, I would suggest you be factual and nonjudgmental in your conversation. Keep it short and sweet. You could simply say: “I’m telling you this because I care about you…” After talking to your co-worker you might be able to decipher if this is a trendy thing, a lifestyle choice or something more. Offer to help, if you feel it’s appropriate. If you’re not tight with this co-worker, maybe someone else in the office would be better fit to speak with him.
Another thought is to talk to your manager. Suggest the office call a meeting and during the meeting do a housekeeping and dress code refresher. This helps to not single anyone out and might be a great opportunity to finally get hoodies approved as acceptable casual Friday attire.
If all else, it’s the holiday season, and Secret Santas are rampant this time of year. You can always drop an Old Spice gift set on his desk! Put a bow on it.
Take care!
