50 years ago: 1965

• The Albert Lea wrestling team defeated Winona 28-11. Winning matches for the Tigers were Chuck Nelson at 95 pounds, Bill Fynbo at 103, Mark Allen at 112, Dean Hoeve at 138, Ken Stencel at 145, Bob Severson at 154, Chuck Jean at 165, Roger Klukow at 175 and John Forman at heavyweight.

• The No. 7-ranked Minnesota Gophers basketball team was victorious over Iowa State 28-11. Leading the Gophers were Paul Presthus with 20 points; Lou Hudson, 18; Tom Kondla and Archie Clark, 15.

• Quarterback Fran Tarkenton threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Paul Flatley and a two-yard touchdown pass to Phil King, and Fred Cox kicked two field goals for the Minnesota Vikings in a 29-7 win over the Detroit Lions.

 

25 years ago: 1990

• The Northwood-Kensett girls’ basketball team raised its season record to 2-1 after defeating Rockford 66-64. Leah Fallgatter led the Vikings with 40 points.

• In the opening meet of the season, the Albert Lea boys’ swimming team defeated Rochester John Marshall 107-84. The 200-yard medley relay was won by Albert Lea’s team of Chad Bergo, Ryan Neist, Tim Hovde and Chris Schmitz.

• Goals by Bill Klingbeil, Chad Hacker, Todd Intihar, 2, Jason Gilderhus, Steve Hebert and Bill Deyak led the Albert Lea hockey team to a 7-3 victory over Mankato East.

• In a Gopher Conference basketball game, Alden-Conger-Freeborn defeated Bethlehem Academy 53-50 in overtime. Aaron Phillips scored 18 points and Chris Sorenson, 17, for the Knights.

 

10 years ago: 2005

• The Albert Lea girls’ basketball team opened its Big Nine Conference season with a 70-67 win against Faribault. Leading the Tigers were Annika Smed and Ali Demmer with 13 points and Niki Hendrickson with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

• The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team defeated Waseca 4-1, and the Albert Lea girls’ hockey team won as well, 4-2. Scoring goals for the boys were Dustin Arendt, 2, Zack Schumaker and Mark Walton. Scoring for the girls’ team were Brittany Osmundson, Mandi Passingham, Katie Nelson and Sarah Jensen.
