ST. PAUL — The number of people killed in traffic crashes in Minnesota rose in 2015.
Preliminary figures from the state Office of Traffic Safety show 396 people have died so far on Minnesota roads last year. That’s up from 361 traffic fatalities for all of 2014.
When all the final traffic numbers are in, the state projects 405 road fatalities in 2015. That would be the highest number of Minnesota traffic deaths since 2010 when 411 people died.
According to the preliminary numbers, Minnesota saw 361 fatal crashes to date in 2015, compared with 319 in 2014. The number of motorcyclists, pedestrians and bicyclists killed in crashes were all up last year, compared with the previous year.
Safety officials are calling on Minnesotans to commit to safe driving in the new year.
According to Freeborn County records, there were two fatalities in either Albert Lea or Freeborn County. Information about traffic deaths on interstates 35 or 90 was unavailable as of press time.
• Elizabeth Zwinger, 33, of Glenville died July 26 after a motorcycle struck a deer about a mile south of Hayward.
Zwinger was riding the motorcycle with Jacob Garrison, 31, also of Glenville, who was taken by Mayo 3 to a Rochester hospital with injuries.
The crash took place on Freeborn County Road 26, also known as 810th Street. Authorities stated Garrison was able to tell deputies they were heading north on the road, when a deer “came out of nowhere” and they hit the deer.
The two were ejected from the motorcycle, and neither was reportedly wearing a helmet.
• Joann Carol Klein, 66, of Albert Lea died after she was reportedly struck by a pickup heading westbound while she was crossing East Main Street near McDonald’s.
Leslie David Jones, 51, of Hartland faces a charge of criminal vehicular homicide and driving without a license in connection with the crash.
This is the fifth year consecutively that there have been five or less traffic fatalities in the county.
There were three in both 2013 and 2014.
