The Albert Lea Police Department and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office arrested seven people for drunken driving during a statewide enforcement campaign during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
More than 300 law enforcement agencies across the state participated in the campaign, which was conducted by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety. The campaign went from Nov. 25 through Jan. 2.
During the increased enforcement, local law enforcement stopped 484 vehicles for a variety of violations, according to an Albert Lea Police Department news release.
Out of these stops, 14 people were arrested. In addition to arresting seven drivers for drunken driving, police arrested four people on warrants or probation violations and three people for felony drug charges.
The following citations were given:
• 28 for driving with no license or an invalid license
• 24 for insurance violations
• Three for seat belt violations
• Eight for open bottle violations
• One for underage drinking
Police encouraged people to make a new year’s resolution to not drive drunk.
“New year’s resolutions come and go for many, but committing to drive sober is a resolution that cannot be broken — too many lives are at risk,” said Albert Lea Police Department Lt. Jeff Strom. “If we all encourage our friends, family and co-workers to plan ahead or volunteer to be that designated driver, together we can save lives and prevent serious injuries caused by drunk drivers.”
In the last five years, 479 people were killed in drunken driving-related crashes in Minnesota — 88 in 2014 alone.
Police advised people to prevent drunken driving by planning for a safe ride, offering to be a designated driver, buckling seat belts and reporting drunken driving.
