Leona Sauer, 1921-2016

Funeral services for Leona M. Sauer, 94, of Albert Lea will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home. The Rev. Kent Otterman will officiate. Burial will be at Alden Cemetery. Leona died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea.

Leona Mae Sauer was born May 26, 1921, in Alden Township, the daughter of Henry and Delia (Hegberg) Schaudt. She attended and graduated from Alden High School and then attended Hamilton Business School. Leona was a bookkeeper for several automobile dealerships in the area and retired as the office manager from Albert Lea Freezer Warehouse. On April 29, 1943, she was united in marriage to Orville Sauer in Walters. The couple enjoyed traveling to many different states, taking casino trips, wintering in Texas and spending the summer in Grand Marais. Leona enjoyed reading and spending time with her family. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her children Roxanne (George) Koolmo of Champlin, Carla (Charlie) Granholm of Austin and John Sauer of St. Paul; son-in-law, Veryl Schewe of Alden; grandchildren Allen (Michele) Schewe, Brett Schewe and partner, Maxine Wurtz; Stephen Schewe, Thomas Schewe and Aaron Granholm; great-grandchildrenDaniel Baker, Tyler Mitchell, Nathan Schewe, Owen Granholm and Eva Granholm; in-laws Betty Kalis, Ralph (Carole Staelgrave) Sauer, Barb (Wayne) Enderson and Clair (Lois) Sauer; and any nieces, nephews and cousins.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son at birth; husband, Orville “Bud” Sauer; daughter, Kathleen Schewe; son-in-law, John Duggan; brother, Carl Schaudt; sisters Ardis (Leon) Howser, Maxine (Howard) Sweet and Virginia (Orville) Hoeg; and in-laws Verneta and Ralph Reindal and Francis Kalis.

Memorials preferred to Good Samaritan Society of Albert Lea or for pancreatic cancer research.
