Most of the exterior wall of Halverson Elementary School is planned for rehabilitation this summer.
The Albert Lea school board approved the rehabilitation of the school wall in its consent agenda Tuesday night.
The rehabilitation will include replacing damaged brick and sealing as needed. Work will take place on the entire school exterior wall, except for the media center.
According to Director of Facilities Jim Anderson, the largest cost will come from tuckpointing, which is replacing the mortar between the bricks.
The project is expected to cost nearly $240,000 and is expected to start as soon as school is done.
Superintendent Mike Funk said the project is included in the district’s long-term maintenance plan.
The project is planned for completion by mid-August and is not expected to affect students because summer school will be at Hawthorne Elementary School.
Funk said the construction is needed.
“It’s an old building, and we need to update the building’s infrastructure to make sure it remains viable for years into the future,” he said.
Anderson said the project protects the public’s investment in the school. He said the school was built in 1956, and the rehabilitation should last for at least 30 years.
