SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — North Dakota State’s five football national championship trophies are on a tour of Scheels stores in the upper Midwest, but they won’t be making a scheduled stop in South Dakota.

A Bison trophy display at the Scheels store in Sioux Falls on Sunday has been canceled after complaints by people affiliated with South Dakota State — a rival to NDSU on the gridiron.

“My first reaction was shock, then anger,” former SDSU football player Paul Rystrom said. “It seemed like salt in an open wound.”

NDSU, which competes in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, is the first team in college football history to win five straight national championships. SDSU has made four consecutive appearances in the FCS playoffs but hasn’t reached the title game.

Sioux Falls Scheels store manager Chris Kray said NDSU officials informed him the trophies won’t be coming, and NDSU’s online schedule for the trophy tour has a red slash and the word CANCELED for the Sioux Falls stop.

“They apologized for any inconvenience,” Kray said.

The trophies are being displayed in several North Dakota cities and in Rochester, Minnesota. Scheels, an outdoors and sporting goods chain, is based in Fargo, home to NDSU. SDSU is in Brookings, South Dakota, less than an hour from Sioux Falls.

Trevor Gebhart, a high school football standout in Sioux Falls who went on to play for NDSU and help the Bison win the first four national titles, thinks the trophy tour tiff is a bit silly.

“Scheels is just trying to promote their business and get people in the store,” said Gebhart, who lives in the Minneapolis area. “There are Bison fans in South Dakota, and that following has grown in recent years, for obvious reasons.”
