The Minnesota Department of Transportation reminds motorists that only half the work is completed once the snow has subsided and the roads look clear.

The days after a snowstorm can be some of the busiest for MnDOT snowplow operators, who are tending to the winter weather cleanup along the shoulders, bridge decks and highway crossovers. Communities in southeast Minnesota reported receiving snow totals that ranged from 4 inches to 12 inches Wednesday and Thursday.

“Our crews work around the clock to get the roads back to bare pavement, but we want motorists to also watch out for our snowplows as they finish the storm cleanup,” said Don Nosbisch, District 6 West maintenance superintendent.

Cleanup will continue and motorists will see crews on the roads, shoulders and bridges today. If you’re able, move over a lane as you approach the vehicles. If no lane is available, slow down. Conditions can remain slick with all of the snow and freezing temperatures.

“If people can slow down and give us some room, it helps us get our work done safely and makes road conditions safer for all,” said Tim Zierden, District 6 East maintenance superintendent.

MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
