NORTHROP — A historical church in a small southern Minnesota community has been heavily damaged by fire.

Truman police said the fire early today destroyed the sanctuary at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church on Highway 15 in Northrop. Authorities said the fire spread, causing the roof to collapse.

The church and school were founded in 1890. Northrop is a community of about 230 people in Martin County.
