Weekend Planner: Event showcasing Albert Lea’s heritage to take place at mall

An event organized to celebrate Albert Lea’s diverse heritage will be on Saturday at Northbridge Mall.
The seventh annual A Taste of Heritage will be from 1 to 3 p.m.
There will be free entertainment, heritage displays, food samples and children’s activities.
People will be able to walk through the mall and see displays representing different heritage.
Entertainment includes the Albert Lea Elementary School Singers, Rince na Chroi Irish Dancers and Tejedores Musical. St. Theodore’s students will sing songs of peace.
A Taste of Heritage is sponsored by the city’s Human Rights Commission, Riverland Community College Multicultural Services, Albert Lea Convention and Visitors Bureau, Freeborn County Historical Society and the Roland Hanson and Kay L. Hanson Foundation.
The following is a roundup of other events taking place this weekend:
Friday
• Joseph’s Closet, sponsored by Our Father’s House, will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event offers free, clean clothing, linens and shoes.
• The Myrtle Fire Department will host a barbecue chicken and rib supper from 5 to 8 p.m. at the American Legion in Glenville. Cost is $12. Proceeds will go toward purchase of equipment for the fire department. Food will be prepared by Smokin Bros BBQ.
• An Albert Lea High School jazz concert will be at 7 p.m. at the high school.
Saturday
• A pancake breakfast for Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Stalker will be from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Fairlane Building.
Donations will be accepted. People will have a chance to meet Stalker and give money for a bulletproof vest for the K-9.

• The Celebrate With the Saints fundraiser will begin at 5 p.m. at St. Casimir’s Catholic School in Wells.
• Alden American Legion Post 404 will host a steak fry from 5 to 8 p.m. Cost is $13. Menu includes 10-ounce ribeye, baked potato, cole slaw and garlic toast.
• Sinatra and Company, featuring music from the Rat Pack era, will perform at 7 p.m. at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $25. Group features Colleen Raye, Tim Patrick and Debbie O’Keefe.
• The Story Show, which features local people reading stories, poems and letters, will begin at 7 p.m. at the Lighthouse Event Center. Money raised will support the Garth Barker Memorial Scholarship Fund. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets are available at Marshall Street Music, Hy-Vee, Stadheim Jewelers and the Albert Lea Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Sunday
• Albert Lea American Legion Post 56 will host a breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost is $7.50. Menu includes pancakes, sausage, fruit cup, potatoes, scrambled eggs with or without diced ham, juice and coffee.
• Grace Lutheran Church will host a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, 918 Garfield Ave. Cost is $8 for adults, $5 for children 5 through 12 and free for children under 5. Menu includes Denny Brue pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice, coffee and milk. The breakfast is a fundraiser to redecorate and refurbish the fireside room.
• The Casino Royale fundraiser will begin at 6 p.m. at St. Theodore Catholic School.
