MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is trying to revoke the air quality permit from a Minneapolis scrap metal company, saying the business has misled regulators and is putting high levels of metals into the air over the city’s north side.

The MPCA said Northern Metals runs a metal shredder that’s believed to be the main source of particulate emissions that have repeatedly violated state air quality standards near the site on the Mississippi River since 2014.

The agency announced Thursday that it filed a court motion to immediately shut down the shredder while it pursues the lengthy process of revoking its permit.

Northern Metals denies the allegations, saying it’s in full compliance with the permit requirements.

A hearing is set for June 9 in Ramsey County District Court.
