The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an air pollution advisory for portions of western, central and southern Minnesota through 9 p.m. today.

With forecasted temperatures in the low 90s, mostly sunny skies and light south-southwesterly winds will promote the creation of ozone in the advisory area.

The agency said as a result the air quality index is expected to reach to the low to mid-90s today, which is approaching air quality conditions considered unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Ozone concentrations will decline overnight with thunderstorms but are expected to increase again Saturday.

Sensitive groups include people with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, the elderly, children and people who participate in outdoor activities requiring extended or heavy exertion.

These people are encouraged to postpone or reduce vigorous outdoor activity or schedule this activity for later in the morning.

High ozone levels may make it more difficult to breathe deeply and vigorously, causing shortness of breath and breathing discomfort. It could result in coughing and a sore or scratchy throat.

People are encouraged to contact their physician if they experience these symptoms.
