Albert Lea baseball takes third at state

50 years ago: 1966

• In the first round baseball game at the Minnesota State Baseball Tournament the Albert Lea High School Tigers defeated Wells 1-0. Dick Wayne threw a one-hitter for the win.

The Tigers were defeated by Hastings 6-1 in the second game. Rick Swanson had two hits for the Tigers. New Ulm shut out Albert Lea 3-0 in the third-place game.

• Named to the All-State Baseball Team from ALHS were Rick Swanson at short stop and Dick Wayne at pitcher. Also named to the All-State Baseball Team was pitcher Gene Hassing from Wells High School.

• Home runs by Jerry Nelson, Bill Danielson, Tom Hoffman and Bill Malepsy led First Federal to a 21-11 win over Wilson and Co. in an American League slow pitch game.

 

25 years ago: 1991

• The Glenville American Legion baseball team defeated Lyle 5-4. Jason Senne hit a three-run homer for Glenville.

• Named to the All-Big Nine Conference Girls Track Team from ALHS were Mollee Ludtke, Laura Olson and Amy Jensen.

• The Albert Lea Eagles U-14 boys soccer team raised its season record to 4-1 with a 5-3 victory against Mankato. Scoring goals for Albert Lea were Nate Ellsworth (2), James Moneel, Bryan Kyllo and Jesse Guerra.

• The Albert Lea American Legion baseball team opened its season with a 14-2 win over Hayfield. Derek Brown picked up the win. Travis Olson had four RBIs and Scott Johnston added three more RBIs.

 

10 years ago: 2006

• Named to the All-Big Nine Conference Softball Team from ALHS were Marisa Cottrel and Kat Ladwig. Shelby Vietz received Honorable Mention.

• The Albert Lea Colonels defeated Wells 7-1 for their first win of the sea on. Alex Hanson threw a one-hitter for the win.

• The Glenville-Emmons American Legion baseball team won its first game of the season with a 7-3 win over Byron. Devin Kaasa and Jarrad Knutson homered for G-E.

• Albert Lea Post 56 American Legion baseball team scored all its runs in the sixth inning in a 5-3 win over the Rochester Eagles.
