I’ll be the first one to admit that I wanted the Minnesota Timberwolves to draft Kentucky’s Jamal Murray instead of Providence’s Kris Dunn.

Now that the pick has been made, I’m ecstatic Minnesota ended up with Dunn.

With Dunn, Minnesota can go a number of ways and now have more depth at the guard spots.

Dunn is a bit older than most rookies, but he is good, extremely athletic and plays extremely hard. He has drawn comparisons to John Wall. Both players aren’t excellent shooters, but both can pass, beat defenders off the dribble and score around the rim. Also, Dunn is an excellent defender and that will be his role from the start.

Dunn also gives Minnesota some flexibility at the point guard spot. While the Timberwolves are committed to Ricky Rubio for four more seasons, new head coach and President of Basketball Operations Tom Thibodeau could choose to trade Rubio for other players, leaving Dunn the presumptive starting point guard.

There were many rumblings last week that Minnesota was looking to trade Dunn, Zach LaVine and a future first round pick to Chicago for Jimmy Butler. I am pleased the deal didn’t go through, but wouldn’t have been too upset if it did. Butler is a fine player, but two players — who have an opportunity to be very good — are worth more than one very good player. In this instance, I’m OK with having more quantity over quality.

Now free agency will begin in a few days, and the Timberwolves figure to be very active. I really hope Minnesota adds some depth, but also some quality veterans who still have a considerable amount of tread left on the tires. I think a guy like Atlanta’s Al Horford would be a fantastic piece to the puzzle. He has spent his entire career with the Hawks. In my opinion, I think he should leave Atlanta because it will never be a place where a championship can be won.

Another guy or two Minnesota will strongly consider is Chicago’s Joakim Noah and Miami’s Luol Deng. Both played under Thibodeau while he was the coach of the Bulls, and both players respected and loved playing for him.

Of course, there are bigger names out on the market — Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Durant, Chandler Parsons, Dwight Howard, and Pau Gasol, to name a few — and I think Minnesota should actively pursue some of those guys. However, the Timberwolves also need to stay realistic.

It’ll be an interesting offseason.
