Area businesses pass tobacco checks

All of the Albert Lea businesses checked this week for tobacco sales compliance passed without violations, according to police.
The Albert Lea Police Department on Wednesday conducted the checks by sending a 17-year-old decoy into the businesses, who attempted to purchase tobacco products. None of the establishments made illegal sales.
Minnesota law requires law enforcement to conduct tobacco compliance checks at least once per year.
Retail clerks who sell tobacco to minors are issued citations for the first violation, which carries a maximum penalty of up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
A second violation by the same clerk within a five-year period is a gross misdemeanor violation.
Administrative penalties of up to $250 and a seven-day suspension of a tobacco license can be assessed to businesses for failing the checks.
