Future of suburban Fourth of July festival in doubt

EAGAN — Organizers of a suburban Twin Cities Fourth of July bash fear this year’s 50th celebration might be the last.
The majority of board members who run the city of Eagan’s July 4th Funfest have reached their 10-year term limit and not enough people have stepped up to fill their slots. That means the committee will dissolve.
The panel put out a news release in May seeking other organizations that might take over the festival and serve as host.
“It was very sad, you’re going to make me cry here,” event chair Susan Ryan told the station. “We have a lot of pride in ownership in this event and we don’t want to see it go away.”
The three-day festival, which first began with neighborhood children riding their bikes to a local grocery store, has become a highlight of the year for Eagan and one of the city’s biggest annual events. It began Saturday with a blood drive and a children’s bike parade and each day features a carnival, a DJ, live entertainment and a poker tournament.
The festival is scheduled to conclude Monday evening with fireworks. About 100,000 people are expected to attend.
“It’d be really sad to lose it,” Eagan resident Jill Wohlman said, “because we’ve found this to be part of our tradition now.”
