Roger Thorson, 1946-2016

Roger D. Thorson, 70, of Scarville, Iowa, died Thursday, July 21, 2016, at Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scarville. The Revs. Randy Baldwin and Kevin Olson will officiate. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in rural Scarville. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E. Main St. in Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Roger Dean Thorson was born May 19, 1946, to Selmer and Nettie (Bergland) Thorson, in the Forest City Community Hospital. He attended school in Scarville through sixth grade and finished seventh through 12th grade at Lake Mills Community School. Roger graduated with the class of 1964.
Throughout the years, Roger had various jobs including working at Wilson & Co., farming with his dad, Selmer, and working at Compack Coffee, Deluxe Products and at a tile factory. Roger also worked in Scarville, Joice, Iowa, and Kiester as a meat cutter. He also drove an end-loader in the peat bog and worked as a hired man for area farmers Gordy Anderson and Richard Oulman.Roger enjoyed going to rummage sales and auctions, as well as picking up sticks with his lawn mower.
Survivors include Lynnette Kleveland; brother, Arden (Delores) Thorson, of Northwood; sister, Nancy (Richard) Helland, of Emmons; brother-in- law, Leroy Brackey of Lake Mills; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Selmer and Nettie Thorson; sister, Sharon Brackey; and niece, Sarah Brackey.
In Lynn’s words, “Roger and I were not blessed with any children of our own. But we had lots of kids in Forest City and other places that call us mom and dad. Some even call us grandma and grandpa…that works for us. Sorry, I don’t want to name any names I might forget someone by accident. We also have adults that claim us as family. Roger will be missed by one and all. I love you all.”
