An Albert Lea man is facing prison time after reportedly leading an officer on a motorcycle chase Sunday in Albert Lea.
Jordon Allen VanRyswyk, 29, was charged with fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle Monday in Freeborn County District Court.
Court documents state an officer was on routine patrol at about 8:30 p.m. Friday when he saw a male riding a motorcycle in the city park near Minnesota Highway 13, court documents state. The motorcycle reportedly pulled out of the park through grass and onto Highway 13, with the officer following and catching up to the motorcycle just south of Sunset Street.
The officer reportedly activated his emergency lights as the motorcycle drove away at about 60 mph, according to court documents. After the driver reportedly looked back and made a motion with his left arm, the officer honked his air horn twice and the driver made a turn without signaling onto 220th Street.
After the officer activated his sirens, the driver allegedly pulled away, sped up and drove through the backyard of a residence, before crossing 220th Street and heading south onto Seath Drive, court documents state. The officer reportedly followed the motorcycle to a dead end, then watched it turn around and head toward the officer’s squad.
The driver reportedly looked at the officer multiple times and went through another yard, heading west and crossing the centerline multiple times and swerving within his lane.
The driver headed toward a cornfield and the motorcycle stalled, court documents state. The driver reportedly tried to restart it, and when the officer got out of his vehicle to apprehend VanRyswyk, he reportedly restarted the motorcycle and drove toward the cornfield, court documents state.
The officer reportedly got out of his vehicle and tried to cut off the driver, but the driver allegedly doubled back and headed toward 220th Street, before veering sharply left into a heavily wooded area south of 220th Street.
After the officer made two announcements over a PA system that he was with the Albert Lea Police Department and that VanRyswyk was under arrest, he heard VanRyswyk say he was injured.
After being apprehended, VanRyswyk said he was not thinking, court documents state, noting that he thought he could hide out long enough but that police had caught him on the way out of town.
VanRyswyk reportedly claimed he did not have a license or a permit and said it was a joy ride. He was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea with a wrist injury.
VanRyswyk was released on his own recognizance, and his next appearance in court is scheduled for Aug. 11.
