Jaycees stay undefeated

50 years ago: 1966

• In Church League softball Wayne Walcholz hit a three-run home run to lead Hayward-Trondhjem to a 7-4 win over Mansfield. St. Theodore defeated Central Lutheran in the second game of the night. Zeke Christianson homered, hit two singles and scored four runs for St. Theodore’s.

• The Jaycees remained undefeated in the Albert Lea Slowpitch League with a 13-0 season record after defeating the North Side Business team 13-1. Dan Garenz had two doubles for the Jaycess.

• Sally Hamborg and Karen Williamson each were 4 for 4 to lead Home Lumber to a 15-8 victory over North Side Mobil in the Albert Lea Women’s Softball League.

 

25 years ago: 1991

• The Lou-Rich Women’s softball team won the Division 3 title in the Terry, Dawn and Staley 18th annual softball tournament. Team members were Jenny Molden, Karel Hansen, June White, Sue Nielson, Kathy Dimit, Tammy Indrelie, Tammy Eggum, Jill Gaetze, Carlyn Tufte, Sherrie Gayken, Cheryl Enderson, Mitch Thomas, Pam Tufte, Julie Meyer and Shelly Menghini.

• Nate Olson of Albert Lea won the United States Swimming Association Minnesota State Championship in the 13-14 age group in the 50-yard freestyle.

• Jason Hoiseta of Albert Lea hit hole-in-one on the 108-yard, par 3 third hole at Clarks Grove Golf Course.

 

10 years ago: 2006

• The Bayside Skiers of Albert Lea finished third in Division 2 at Show Ski National Championships at Eagle Lake in Evansdale, Iowa.

• Winners in the Men’s Albert Lea City Open Golf Championships were the following: Championship Flight – Phil Schmidt; First Flight – Chad Mickelson; Second Flight – Ryan Wuerflien; Third Flight – Van Schulz; Fourth Flight – Mike Billat; Fifth Flight – Leon Billat; Sixth Flight – Ken Pederson; Seventh Flight – Bob Hanson. In the Women’s Division Marti Anderson won the Championship Flight and Melissa Bakken won the First Flight.

• The Minnesota Twins moved within two games of the Chicago White Sox for the Central Division lead after defeating the Cleveland Indians 4-1. Johan Santana raised his record to 14-5 for the Twins.
