50 years ago: 1966

• In the State Line amateur baseball playoffs Alden defeated Glenville 13-2 and moved into Regional Playoffs. Winning pitcher Jim Bratvold had three hits, as did Brad Sweet.

• Grace Lutheran defeated Mansfield 11-8 in the Albert Lea Church League playoffs. Dave Long and Don Tasker each had three hits for Grace.

• Bob Driesbach, Tim Hoffman and Tom Parry all hit home runs for First Federal in its 13-11 win over the North Star team in the National Division of the Albert Lea Slowpitch League. In the American Division the Tribune defeated Harolds Bar 23-4.

Hitting two home runs each for the Tribune were Elmer Vandenheuvel, Steve Hanson and Larry Pence.

 

25 years ago: 1991

• Results in the KATE Albert Lea City Golf Champioships were the following: championship flight —  Jeff Elseth; presidential flight — Dave Fligge; first flight — Ed Bellrichard: second flight — Ace Carlson; third flight — Joe Sczublewski; fourth flight — Mike Anderson; fifth flight — Tom Baas; sixth flight — Al Toft;  seventh flight — Bob Schideler; eighth flight — Craig Stickford; and ninth flight — Roger Brua. In the women’s division, Claudia Pilot was the champion and Paula Bennet won the first flight.

• Scott Erickson pitched his 16th victory for the Minnesota Twins in their 10-5 win over the Seattle Mariners.

 

10 years ago: 2006

• The Albert Lea High School girls’ tennis team defeated Lyle-Pacelli 7-0 in their first match of the 2006 season. Winners in singles for ALHS were Amanda Leonard at No. 1, Niki Hendrickson at No. 2, Hali Hendrickson at No. 3 and Sarah Wenum at No. 4.

Winning in doubles were the following: at No. 1 Liz Thompson and Cara Thorn, at No. 2 Kelli Hanson and Alarie Maris, and at No. 3 Dani Merfeld and Cori Madson. ALHS defeated Worthington 6-1 in its second match of the year. Winners in singles against Worthington were Dezeray Jacobs at No. 1, Niki Hendrickson at No. 2 and Hali Hendrickson at No. 3. In doubles ALHS won the No. 1 and No. 2 matches using the same players as against L-P. The Tigers used the victorious Chelsea Hill and Naomi Holt  at No. 3 doubles.
