A.L. girls’ soccer defeats Mankato West

50 years ago: 1966
• Michael’s House of Beauty defeated Home Lumber 11-9 to win the Albert Lea women’s softball league title. Team members included Max Colstrup, Sharon Jenson, Gail Gendler, Darlene Underwood, Marlene Gray, Carol Colstrup, Char Zimmermen, Darlene Claussen, Lois Johnson and Orlean Woodside.
• Alden High School opened its football season with a 26-12 victory over Janesville. Scoring touchdowns for the Blackhawks were Mark Rasmussen (2), Allan Schmidt and Glen Mathiason.
• Chuck Slette, Doyle Freemyer and Jim Nelson each scored a touchdown to lead the Albert Lea High School football team to a 20-7 win over Jackson in their season opener.
• The Glenville High School football team defeated Emmons 31-7 with touchdown passes from quarterback Clark Cipra to Dick Grinolds, Jim Benesh and Gary Buchanan.
25 years ago: 1991
• Returning letter winners for head coach Howie Melom’s ALHS boys cross country team were Albert Savala, Chris Wangen, Mike Pfaff, Tom Anderson and Jake Christianson.
• Marc Bartels rushed for 216 yards in 36 carries and scored three touchdowns for the Lake Mills football team in its 21-6 win over Rockford.
• The champion golfer at the 63rd annual Shortstop Golf Tournament was Jeff Elseth. The Presidential flight winner was Clark Cipra, Executive flight was Jon Tveite, Edgewater flight was Paul Meyer and Senior flight was Dick Davies. Other flight winners were first, Ken Skrovig; second, Tom Falk; third, Paul Stafford; fourth, David Aeikens; fifth, Sonny Johnson; and sixth, Todd Peterson.
10 years ago: 2006
• The ALHS girls soccer team defeated Mankato West 6-2. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Jenna Christensen (2), Leah Walters (2), Conner Peterson and Whitney Wilson.
• Winners in the Shortstop Golf Tournament held at Green Lea Golf Course in Albert Lea were the following: Championship flight, Phil Schmidt; Presidential flight, Brett Richards; Senior flight, Bob Oothoudt; first flight, Steve Foss; second flight, Cliff James; third flight, Terry Heilman; fourth flight, Paul Peterson; and fifth flight, Mark Habben.
• Ryan Wach gained 204 rushing yards and scored four touchdowns for the Alden-Conger football team in their 36-20 victory over Cleveland.
