United South Central High School will host a farm safety program next Thursday for students and parents.

The event is from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Combine, grain, ATV and snowmobile, tractor, lawnmower, fire and ambulance, auger and electricity safety will be discussed.

Wells Fire Department and a Benco Electric Cooperative representative will conduct safety demonstrations for approximately 400 kindergarten through eighth-grade students from United South Central Elementary School, United South Central Middle School and St. Casimir’s Catholic School.

USC FFA adviser Dan Dylla said advisors will emphasize to students the need to inform their parents of the necessity of knowing where they are and making eye contact while operating farm equipment.

“You just can’t see the kids,” Dylla said, noting his belief that young children should not be on scene while adults are operating farm equipment.

“It really makes me nervous when I see kids on their laps when they are mowing lawn,” he said.

Dylla advised parents slow down and make sure no one is around when operating equipment.

He said the program has an impact on students.

“It makes a lasting impression on these kids,” Dylla said. “They do remember that.”
