One week after snapping its 32-game losing streak with a dominating performance over Tri-City United, the Albert Lea Tigers football team traveled to rival Austin with the hopes of ruining the Packers’ Homecoming.

But the Packers had other things in mind. Austin used a 20-point first quarter, followed by 13 more points in the second quarter to build a 33-7 lead at halftime.

The Packers would eventually win the game going away, 50-7.

Albert Lea quarterback Sam Chalmers completed 9-23 passes for 211 yards, but the Tigers were just lacking the execution they showed last week.

“We played hard, but we just couldn’t execute at crucial points in the game,” said Tigers coach Corey Black. “Mistakes and missed opportunities limited our opportunities. But hats off to (Austin) for executing its gameplan and limiting their errors to win this game.”

Ben Witham led the Tigers’ defense with 12 tackles and he also caught three passes for 64 yards and rushed for the Tigers only score of the game. Jessie Hernandez had 10 tackles and rushed for 37 yards.

Jack Buendorf had five catches for 118 yards.

Albert Lea (1-5) will take a few days to regroup before it hosts Fairmont (5-1) Friday night.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Jim Gustafson Field.
