The Albert Lea High School music department will present its first concert of the year Monday. According to a press release, there will be two different concerts this year to accommodate the growing music program and the large crowd. The concert at 6 p.m. will feature the ALHS Tiger Orchestra, the Celebr8 Choir and the Tiger Choir. The concert at 8 p.m. will be the Symphony Orchestra, Varsity Choir and Concert Choir. Both performances will take place at First Lutheran Church.
The Tiger Orchestra will perform arrangements of classical favorites including, Vivaldi’s “Autumn” from the Four Seasons, Handel’s “Allegro from Concerto Grosso” and “An Irish Air” by Terry McQuilkin, that the class has fallen in love with. The Symphony Orchestra will be performing an arrangement of Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings” and Bach’s “Concerto for Two Violins in d minor.”
All four choirs will perform secular and sacred works. The Celebr8 Choir will start with a Swahili welcoming song and sing the famous Pachelbel “Canon in D.” Tiger Choir students will sing an African processional and the favorite folk song, “Danny Boy.” The Varsity Choir will sing “For the Beauty of the Earth” and an acappella arrangement of the lullaby “All the Pretty Horses.” Concert Choir students will open with a rousing South African greeting song, sing the famous “Alleluia” by Randall Thompson and a contemporary choral piece with animals sounds and chanting. For the finale the Concert Choir will perform “Crossing the Bar” by Gwyneth Walker with the chamber strings and added winds.
The orchestras are directed by Rebekah Crissinger and the choirs by Mary Bissen and Diane Heaney.
Tickets for the concert are $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and students and are available at the door. There will also be a $35 family music concert pass sold at the door that will admit a family to all regular orchestra, band and choir concerts for the whole year.
