ST. PAUL — The iconic red “1st” sign is glowing again on the downtown St. Paul skyline.
The sign was relit Tuesday, after being dark for 10 months. A storm knocked out part of the lights on the 50-foot sign last winter.
Madison Equities, the company that owns the building, decided to replace the sign’s neon with LED rope lighting.
Mayor Chris Coleman said the sign is “the symbol of the city of St. Paul.”
Madison Equities completed energy-efficient upgrades this year at the First National Bank Building and two nearby properties, US Bank Center and 375 Jackson.
The company bought the First National Bank Building last year. A company official said the LED lights will save about $600 a year in lighting costs.
