The Albert Lea Tigers wrestling team (No. 4 in Class AA) didn’t leave much standing their wake after going 4-0 this past Saturday at the New Prague Duals.
They took apart Waseca (60-6), St. Peter (49-19), New Prague (38-19) and Sibley East (48-15).
In its first match, Albert Lea won nine of the 12 matches in which both teams had wrestlers competing. Albert Lea picked up two more wins by forfeit, too. Tanner Palmer, Nic Cantu, Tyler Harms and Brody Nielsen all picked up wins via pinfall.
Palmer, Harms, Nielsen and Cantu also picked up pinfall wins in Albert Lea’s win over St. Peter. The Tigers were a little less dominant against the Saints, winning just seven matches. It did pick up two more wins via forfeit to bring their total to 18 wins through two matches.
In their third match of the day, The Tigers squared off against No. 10 New Prague.
Cantu picked up his third win of the day with a 20-4 technical fall over Joe DeJong. Albert Lea’s Joe Peterson defeated Taylor Woodyard by a score of 18-10. Albert Lea’s Zach Glazier picked apart Gaige Giles, 20-5, and Palmer picked up his third pin of the day with a win over Dominic Devine.
Three-time state champion Garrett Aldrich made his first appearance of the day in Albert Lea’s final match. He picked up a pinfall win over Sibley East’s Tommy Wentzlaff. Brady Nielsen and Glazier also picked up pinfall wins in the match.
Saturday’s performance had Albert Lea head coach Larry Goodnature in a positive mood heading into Thursday’s big home match against Faribault.
“We had a lot of guys compete hard over the weekend,” Goodnature said. “I was able to use 19 different wrestlers, which was good because I got to see how these guys would respond. For the opening week, I feel we made some strides and found out what kind of depth we have as a team.”
Albert Lea will be in action Thursday when it hosts Faribault.
Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
