Editorial: Be proactive, get involved in budget process

It’s that time of year again. For most of the government entities in the community, it’s budget season.

By the end of the year, new budgets will be in place for the Albert Lea City Council, Freeborn County Board of Commissioners and Shell Rock River Watershed District. The three entities, along with the Albert Lea School Board, will also approve their tax levies for the year.

What does this mean for area residents?

Most of the organizations will host a truth in taxation hearing, where people can learn about the budget and voice their concerns if they have any questions about the proposed budget, levy or other issues.

The Albert Lea School Board hosted its truth in taxation meeting on Monday, and the county hosted its meeting last Thursday.

The Albert Lea City Council will have its meeting Monday. Meetings will be held later in the month for the city and county leaders to actually vote on their budgets and levies.

We encourage people to get involved in these meetings, listen to the presentations and voice concerns — now, rather than later. No matter what it is you have a question about — taxes, hours, staffing, areas for growth, you name it — ask now.

Be proactive in the decision-making ahead of time and try to help come up with solutions, instead of coming back in six months and wishing you had been there earlier.
