County board to consider smaller increase in tax levy

The Freeborn County Board of Commissioners is expected to consider a levy Tuesday that is less than the 2.5 percent preliminary levy introduced in September.

The board will consider the levy during its meeting at 8:30 a.m. at the Freeborn County courthouse.

At 2.5 percent, the levy would increase taxes about $8 on a $100,000 residential homestead property. Taxes would increase about $30 on commercial property valued at $200,000 and decrease about 82 cents on an average acre of tillable land due to a decrease in ag land value.

Freeborn County Administrator John Kluever said the expected decrease came after a better idea of county revenue and expenditures were gathered from the entire year.

“That’s the biggest difference,” he said.

The largest part of the levy increase is due to increased costs to operate the Human Services Department, Kluever said, adding that state mandates and programs have increased, which have either not been funded or are not fully funded.

Kluever said only a handful of the 87 counties in Minnesota have a levy less than 2.5 percent.

“The commissioners’ approach has been very fiscally responsible,” he said.
