After losing to Austin by three goals last week, the Albert Lea girls’ hockey team showed significant improvement when the two teams played Thursday night.
Two first-period goals helped the Tigers to a 2-1 lead after 17 minutes, but Albert Lea was only able to manage one goal in the next two periods and Austin put in two goals — one in the second and third period — to force overtime.
A little over three minutes into overtime, the Packers’Erin Bickler lit the lamp to give Austin a 4-3 overtime win over Albert Lea.
Albert Lea’s Hannah Johnson had a hat-trick through two periods. Austin tied the game at 3-3 late in the third period when Myla Holum scored an even-strength goal.
Albert Lea goaltender Maddie Schneider was peppered with shots. She made 49 saves on 53 shots.
The Tigers managed only 13 shots on the night, but had a scoring percentage of 23 percent.
The Tigers are 3-12 on the season.
Albert Lea will travel to Fairmont on Saturday.
