The 29th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration on Monday will explore a message of peace and justice from both the Islamic and Christian communities.

The event goes from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the lecture room at Riverland Community College, 2200 Riverland Drive.

Khalil Houri of the Islamic Resource Group based out of the Twin Cities will deliver the keynote speech.

Mark Boorsma, pastor of Ascension Lutheran Church, will also speak.

Mary Hinnenkamp, one of the organizers of the event, said the event will highlight all of the commonalities between Islam and Christianity.

“We have so many more things in common than what separate us,” she said. “I think this is a really important message right now.”

In addition to the speakers, students from Lakeview Elementary School will sing under the direction or Roxanne Irons. A scholarship award will also be given.

There is a $3 suggested donation for refreshments. People are asked to bring nonperishable food items for the food shelf.
