An Albert Lea teenager allegedly tried to disarm an Austin police officer of his weapon Monday during a traffic stop that resulted in several potential charges being filed against him and two other males.

The 16-year-old passenger faces fourth-degree assault to a police officer, attempt to disarm a police officer, obstruction of police officer duties and no seat belt. He was transported to a Red Wing correctional facility, said Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger.

Krueger said the incident began at 9:45 p.m. Monday when officers received a report of a car driving southbound in the northbound lane of U.S. Highway 218 north, coming into Austin.

The vehicle was stopped at Riverland Community College. Officers found five Albert Lea juveniles in the 2002 Honda Civic, none of whom were wearing seat belts. Krueger said officers suspected chemical substance use when some of the occupants had trouble answering simple questions. The 17-year-old male driver allegedly admitted to using and having marijuana in the vehicle.

Two of the male passengers got out of the vehicle when the 16-year-old began fighting with police and tried to grab one of the officers’ firearms. Officers used mace to subdue him.

The driver faces charges of driving after revocation and possession of marijuana over 1.4 grams. The second male passenger, 17, faces charges of giving a false name to police, obstruction of police officer duties and no seat belt.

Two 16-year-old female juvenile passengers were cited for not wearing seat belts and were released to their parents’ custody.
