Area students named to dean’s list

Amelia Evenson of Lake Mills, Tanner Jensen of Lake Mills and Makenzie Mauntler of Glenville have been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2016 semester at Buena Vista University.

Justine Stensrude of Lake Mills and Karen Stensrude of Lake Mills, who both attend Buena Vista University’s Mason City campus, were among those named to the dean’s list for terms one and two.

Students named to the dean’s list must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 for the semester, based on a 4.0 grade point system and must have taken at least 12 hours of coursework.

Local students recognized

Haley Harms of Albert Lea, Sara Sanderson of Albert Lea and Makenzie Thorson of Lake Mills were three of the 444 students named to the 2016 fall term dean’s list at Wartburg College. To qualify for the distinction students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or more in at least four course credits during the term.

Wartburg, a four-year liberal arts college internationally recognized for community engagement, enrolls 1,482 students.

Kiester student honored

Claire Christian of Kiester has been named to the 2016 fall semester dean’s list at Luther College.

Luther College’s fall 2016 dean’s list includes 717 students; 114 freshman, 182 sophomores, 181 juniors and 240 seniors. To be named to the dean’s list, a student must earn a semester grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale and must complete at least 12 credit hours with 10 hours of conventional grades.

A national liberal arts college with an enrollment of 2,150, Luther offers an academic curriculum that leads to the Bachelor of Arts degree in more than 60 majors and pre-professional programs.

Iowa State releases dean’s list

Natalie Hagen of Lake Mills, Emily Orban of Emmons, Amy Sanderson of Albert Lea and Morgan Winnekins of Hartland were among those honored on the Iowa State University College of Business dean’s list for the fall 2016 semester.

Iowa State University is one of the nation’s most student-centered public research universities and is recognized among the top 50 public universities in the nation by U.S.News and World Report.

Hartland student recognized

Sarah Riecke of Hartland has been named to the University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth chancellor’s list in recognition of earning a fall 2016 semester grade point average of 3.8 or higher of a possible 4.0.

A.L. student named to dean’s list

Heather Johnson of Albert Lea was named to the fall 2016 dean’s list at The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth. Dean’s list members have achieved a 3.75 grade point average or above on a 4.0 scale.

Band students to participate in tour

The nationally recognized Concordia Band from Concordia College in Moorhead announces its annual domestic tour Feb. 5 through Feb. 12. Tyler Egge of Albert Lea and James Dundas of Wells are two area students who will participate in the concerts.

Concerts are open to the public. Concert dates are:

• 3 p.m. Feb. 5 at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church sanctuary in Mahtomedi

• 7 p.m. Feb. 6 at Central High School auditorium in Waseca

• 7 p.m. Feb. 7 at Eastview High School performing arts center in Apple Valley

• 7 p.m. Feb. 9 at Kasson-Mantorville High School performing arts center in Kasson

• 7 p.m. Feb. 10 at United South Central in Wells

• 7 p.m. Feb. 11 at Elk River High School Zabee Auditorium in Elk River

• 4 p.m. Feb. 12 at Concordia’s campus in Memorial Auditorium in Moorhead

The Concordia Band is a select group of 72 outstanding student musicians, each of whom studies privately with members of Concordia’s acclaimed music faculty. Membership represents a broad range of majors and disciplines from the campus. The ensemble has performed at state and national conventions for the Minnesota Music Educators Association and The National Association for Music Education. The band travels internationally every four years, most recently touring Spain for two weeks in May of 2016. While there, they performed concerts in El Espinar, Granada, Valencia, Alaquás and El Vendrell.

Peter J. Haberman became the ninth conductor of The Concordia Band in 2012. Prior to his appointment at Concordia, Haberman held a similar position as director of bands at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire where he conducted the Wind Symphony, taught courses in conducting and repertoire, supervised student teachers, and was music director of the Chippewa Valley Youth Symphony.
