Albert Lea man charged in alleged strangulation

An Albert Lea man who allegedly strangled a woman Monday was charged with a felony Tuesday in Freeborn County District Court.

Daniel Lee Maine, 42, is charged with domestic assault by strangulation.

Court documents state Maine was charged after officers responded to a domestic situation.

The victim — known to Maine — told police that during an argument she and Maine had in the bedroom, he pinned her on the bed and put his hands around her neck, trying to choke her. An officer reportedly found red marks on her neck consistent with her story.

Court documents state Maine left the residence after a witness said she was going to call the police.

Once officers found Maine, he reportedly said the alleged victim assaulted him. After being arrested, he allegedly became agitated and kicked and headbutted the windows of the squad car. Documents state he told officers he wanted to fight them once he got to jail.

Maine is scheduled to appear in court today.

Domestic assault by strangulation carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
