Busy weekend ahead: festivals, Cochran, cars, fishing

It’s a huge weekend in Albert Lea and Freeborn County, with Eddie Cochran Weekend, Glenville Days, Freeborn Days and Take A Kid Fishing — just to name a couple of things.
The Glenville Days schedule can be found on Page 11 of today’s edition. Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.
Friday, June 11
The Ryan Heath and Linda Draper art show will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
First Lutheran Church will hold a salad luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per person. Proceeds will benefit the stained glass windows fund.
The Pelican Breeze will hold a pizza cruise at 6 p.m. Guitarist David Courey will provide the entertainment. Cost is $20 per person ($5 for children 5 years and younger). Reservations are needed by 4 p.m. Call 383-2630.
The Alden American Legion will hold a pork chop feed from 5 to 8 p.m., served by the Freeborn County Pork Producers. Cost is $9 per person. A flag retirement ceremony will be held at 7 p.m.
The Eddie Cochran Weekend cruise-in social will be held at the Country Inn & Suites from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a free drive-in movie at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds starting at dusk.
Saturday, June 12
The Humane Society of Freeborn County will hold a pancake breakfast fundraiser at Applebee’s from 7 a.m. to noon. All you-can-eat pancakes, orange juice and coffee will be served with a side order of bacon. Humane Society T-shirts and sweatshirts will be available for sale, as will the book, “Ava Finds A Home.” Cost is $5 per person, with all profits going toward operating expenses for the animal shelter.
Freeborn Days events will be held. A pancake breakfast will be held at the Legion hall from 7 to 10 a.m.; citywide garage sales are from 8 a.m. to noon; an art and craft sale at the District 15 school house will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; a 4-H food stand opens at 11 a.m.; a kids’ parade runs from noon to 12:30 p.m. with kids games following from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.; a pulled pork supper by the Freeborn Ambulance and Fire Department will be served from 5 to 8 p.m. A street dance featuring In the Fields at TB3’s will begin at 8:30 p.m.
The 24th annual Eddie Cochran Weekend events include: citywide garage sales; breakfast in the Fairlane Building from 8 to 11 a.m.; the classic car show from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with $2 admission; the annual hospice walk-run starting with registration at 7 a.m. and the walk at 7:30 a.m.; Eddie Cochran and Marion Ross exhibits will be open at the Freeborn County Historical Museum, Roger Wessels will give a presentation about Cochran’s life at 3 p.m. and root beer floats will be served from 1 to 4 p.m.; lineup for the annual 26-mile cruise will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the fairgrounds. Following the cruise, a free street dance featuring L.D. Cruiser and the Tones will be held in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot.
The Albert Lea Art Center will hold its annual Unique Junque Sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1206 W. Richway Drive.
A rummage sale fundraiser for The Story Lady Doll & Toy Museum will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1428 Spartan Ave. Maps for the Citywide Garage Sales in Albert Lea this weekend may be picked up at the Story Lady Doll & Toy Museum at 131 N. Broadway Ave.
The Albert Lea Farmers Market will be open from 9 a.m. to noon in the parking lot at the corner of North Broadway Avenue and Water Street.
The annual Fountain Lake Sportsmen’s Club Take A Kid Fishing event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Edgewater Park fishing pier. Children 16 years and younger can fish without a license. A free rod and reel combo will be given to all kids. There will be lots of fun and prizes.

Northbridge Mall will host a June wedding dress review fashion show at 2 p.m.

The Freeborn County DFL will hold its seventh annual picnic from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Edgewater Park pavilion. There will be guest speakers. Sloppy joes, beans, chips, coffee, Kool-Aid and bars will be served for $7 per person or $20 per family.
Sunday, June 13
The Cloverleaf Lions and the LakeView Lions will hold their annual flight breakfast from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Albert Lea Airport. Pancakes, ham, eggs, milk and coffee will be served. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 years and younger.
The Pelican Breeze will hold a public cruise at 1:30 p.m. Cost is $15 per person ($5 for children 5 years and younger).
