Puppy scams reported
The Albert Lea Police Department has recently taken several reports involving puppy scams, according to the Police Department’s Facebook page.
Though there are many variations, the typical scenario is as follows: The victim will find a puppy for sale online out of the area, which requires the puppy to be shipped.
The seller may even offer to ship the puppy for free. The puppies are usually some sort of purebred or high demand dog. The seller will take the initial agreed upon payment, usually by money transfer. Then, there will always be some sort of problem. Many of the purported problems involve an issue with the shipment such as additional insurance costs, quarantine costs and other miscellaneous fees. The seller will need additional money to be sent before the puppy will arrive. Ultimately, no puppy will ever arrive as there never was a puppy to begin with. All sent money is gone.
The Police Department advises people to use extreme caution when purchasing a pet sight unseen. Police advised people to buy from a breeder they can visit in person or to find a new pet at the Freeborn County Humane Society instead.
