After a week of record- or near record-breaking temperatures in southern Minnesota, the National Weather Service is forecasting a winter storm Thursday and Friday that is expected to bring heavy winds and blowing snow.
Twelve to 15 inches of snow are expected in Steele and Freeborn counties, according to the Weather Service.
The storm is expected to start as rain and turn to snow Thursday evening and continue through Friday evening. Heavy snow will develop between 8 and 10 p.m. Thursday, with increasing winds on Friday.
Wind gusts as high as 45 mph could result in blowing snow and possible blizzard conditions. The Weather Service advised people to drive with caution as the Friday morning and afternoon commutes are expected to be significantly impacted.
The area is under a blizzard warning through Friday evening. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds and poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout conditions, making travel extremely difficult.
The Weather Service advised people to not travel if at all possible, but if you must travel to take a winter survival kit with you.
