1. “Rusalka”

A haunting love story based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid” will be broadcast live in high definition on Saturday to the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center.

Kristine Opalais stars in the new production of Antonin Dvorák’s “Rusalka” at The Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.

The opera will be shown live beginning at 11:55 a.m.

The story has had rave reviews since opening at The Met. It also stars Jamie Barton as Ježibaba, Katarina Dalayman as the Foreign Princess, Brandon Jovanovich as the Prince and Eric Owen as the Water Spirit.

“Rusalka” is the only opera by the famous Czech composer Antonin Dvorák that has gained an international following. Folklore, evocations of the natural and the supernatural worlds and sadness of a love and death are all contained in this human fairytale. This ravishingly symphonic score contains an allegory about giving voice to the voiceless.

It includes Rusalka’s famous aria, “Song to the Moon,” that became famous at concerts and recitals long before the opera became popular.

The opera lasts three hours and 40 minutes with two intermissions. It will be sung in Czech with English subtitles.

Meet the Met will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the theater with overviews of the opera and starring singers.

2. Winter warm-up fundraiser

A winter warm-up fundraiser, an event to raise money for the Five Sisters Project in Wells, will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Casimir’s Church, 320 Second Ave. SW in Wells.

The crafting event will go from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Crafters get a table, three meals, snacks and will be able to make and take several craft items. They will also be entered into a drawing for prizes.

Cost is $25 to attend. People are asked to register in advance by calling 218-317-9185.

A soup lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a suggested $5 donation.

There will also be a bake sale and a cake walk. Five Sisters Project T-shirts will be for sale.

The proceeds of the event will benefit the Five Sisters Project to help raise funds to provide housing for women in crisis.

3. ‘The Language Archive’

A play exploring the impact of words will be presented this weekend at Frank W. Bridges Theater at Riverland Community College in Austin.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. The production is directed by Susan V. Hansen.

The play focuses on George, played by Dathen Johnson, a man whose livelihood is preserving and documenting dying languages. Closer to home, though, language is failing him. He doesn’t know what to say to his wife, Mary, to keep her from leaving him, and he doesn’t recognize the deep feelings that his lab assistant, Emma, has for him.

Individual tickets are $13 for the general public and can be purchased online at www.riverland.edu/tickets or at the Riverland box office in Room E107 in the East Building of the Austin campus. Box office hours are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour before performances.

Riverland students receive two free tickets to each performance with a valid student ID.

4. Soup and pie supper

Emmons firefighters and first responders will have a soup and pie supper from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday in the social hall at Emmons Lutheran Church. Proceeds from the event will benefit training and equipment.

5. Trader Jacks Card & Memorabilia Show

The Trader Jacks Card & Memorabilia Show will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Northbridge Mall, 2510 Bridge Ave. The latest sports cards, framed sports items and plaques will be available.
