50 years ago: 1967

• Winners in the 1967 Albert Lea women’s bowling tournament were the following: singles, Goldean Neff; doubles, Betty Tlamka and Katie VanGuilder; and team (First Federal Savings and Loan) members were Fern Possin, Lucy Goodnature, Virginia Lindbeck, Crystal Stevens and Lola Wayne.

• Alden defeated Freeborn 73-55 and won the Border League title with a 13-1 record in league. Al Lindeman scored 25 points for Alden.                                                                                     

• In the first round of the District 2 West Sub-District, Alden was defeated by Ellendale 67-62 and  Freeborn was defeated by Blooming Prairie 79-62. Steve Wayne led Ellendale with 22 points. Al Lindeman of Alden was the games’ leading scorer with 28. Larry Worke scored 29 points and Jim Turner had 26 for Blooming Prairie. Freeborn was led by John Miller with 32 points. 

25 years ago: 1992

• The Albert Lea High School basketball team defeated Austin 71-56 and swept its regular season. Steve Brigger scored 26 points and Chris Boysen had 12 rebounds for the Tigers. ALHS raised its Big Nine Conference record to 10-4 and its season mark to 13-7.

• The ALHS boys’ swimming team placed 11th in the Minnesota state swimming tournament. The Tigers best finish was a fifth place in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Team members were Jay Jerdee, Gram Cotton, Erik Hendrickson and Nate Olson.

• The United South Central girls’ basketball team defeated Alden-Conger 80-56. USC was led by Angie Nowak with 22 points and Jane Passer with 18. Kim Erickson scored 14 points and Ann Brandt 13 for the Knights.

• The ALHS girls’ basketball team won its first game in the Big Nine Conference after defeating Mankato West 37-35.

10 years ago: 2007

• Brittany Hansen scored 21 points and her 1,000th career point for NRHEG in its 58-37 win over Montgomery-Lonsdale. The Panthers improved their Gopher Conference record to 15-1 and their season mark to 18-7.

• A.J. Kortz scored 30 points, including the winning points as time ran out, in ALHS’s 55-53 victory over Rochester Century.

• Liz Thompson scored 16 points and Niki Hendrickson 13 for the ALHS girls’ basketball team in its 59-38 win over Mankato East.
