An Albert Lea man charged with possessing nearly 10 grams of methamphetamine in April 2016 pleaded guilty Tuesday to a weapons violation in Freeborn County District Court.

Sam Irvin Thompson, 19, pleaded guilty to being an ineligible person in possession of a firearm.

Court documents state Thompson was charged after officers found a number of items in Thompson’s vehicle during a search on April 29, 2016, including four rounds of .22 ammunition, a loaded .22 loaded revolver, a meth pipe and baggies of meth totaling about 8.9 grams.

Thompson reportedly made contradicting statements about the guns in his vehicle and admitted buying meth, saying he used half a gram to 1 gram of meth per day.

Thompson is also charged with third-degree controlled substance possession and switched plates in that case and fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle in a separate case after he allegedly led officers on a high-speed chase that reached speeds of more than 100 mph last October.

Those charges are expected to be dismissed at sentencing.

Sentencing is scheduled for June 15.

Thompson faces a mandatory minimum five-year prison sentence, but is expected to ask for a departure, said Freeborn County Attorney David Walker.
