An Albert Lea woman who allegedly used a telephone cord to strangle a man earlier this week was charged Tuesday with a felony in Freeborn County District Court.

Marcine Kay Miranda, 56, faces a charge of domestic assault by strangulation.

Court documents state Miranda was charged after officers responded to a domestic call Tuesday morning at 928 W. Front St. in Albert Lea. The alleged victim, who was known to Miranda, alleged that during an argument, Miranda put a landline phone cord around his neck and pulled, causing him to have difficulty breathing.

A thin red line across the alleged victim’s neck corresponded with the victim’s account of the incident, court documents state.

Miranda reportedly did not give a clear answer to police and did not deny using the cord during the alleged assault. Miranda’s and the alleged victim’s blood alcohol content levels were reportedly both more than three times the legal limit, court documents state.

District Court Judge Ross Leuning on Tuesday released Miranda on her own recognizance, contingent on Miranda remaining law abiding, making future court appearances, not entering bars or liquor stores and meeting other conditions. A domestic abuse no contact order was issued.

Miranda’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 9.

Domestic assault by strangulation carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
