Minnesota’s Big Ten Tournament came to a close with a 92-80 loss to No. 4 Maryland in the quarterfinals Friday in Indianapolis. Freshman Gadiva Hubbard scored a career-high 28 points for the Golden Gophers (15-16) in her first game against the Terrapins (28-2).

A 27-14 first quarter in Maryland’s favor was too much for the Gophers to overcome. They outrebounded Maryland 36-35 overall, shot 56.8 percent in the second half and outscored the Terrapins 66-65 in the final three quarters but got no closer than five points behind Maryland after the first quarter.

Hubbard, who missed the first two meetings with the Terps with illness or injuries, shot 11-of-20 from the floor, including a 3-for-6 night behind the 3-point line. The freshman was 3-of-3 at the free throw line and added two assists and two steals.

Four Gophers scored in double figures, with Carlie Wagner tallying 21 points. She made five 3-pointers for the second night in a row. Her 10 total triples tied the sixth-most for a single player in one Big Ten Tournament. Wagner had a team-high three steals Friday night.

Bryanna Fernstrom added 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting, and Kenisha Bell scored 11 before leaving the game with an injury. Fernstrom led the Gophers with eight rebounds. Minnesota scored 24 second-chance points and its bench tallied 41 points.

Shatori Walker-Kimbrough matched Hubbard’s scoring total on 11-of-15 shooting. She connected on six of eight 3-point attempts. Brionna Jones had 14 points and 13 rebounds. The Terrapins shot 52.2 percent to Minnesota’s 44.8.

How it happened

Minnesota led for the first several minutes of the game. Taiye Bello scored off an offensive rebound, Jasmine Brunson drove through the defense for a layup and Bryanna Fernstrom made a mid-range jumper for a 6-3 lead. The Terrapins took their first lead at the 5:23 mark during an 11-0 run which put them ahead 14-6 before the Gophers next scored. After 3-pointers by Hubbard and Wagner, Minnesota did not score again until the last 10 seconds. Maryland led 27-14 at the end of the quarter, bolstered by 11 points off turnovers.

The Gophers played the Terps closer in the second, with only a 20-19 deficit within the quarter to trail 47-33 at halftime. The Gophers outscored the Terrapins in the first three minutes of the second to trim the deficit to 31-26. Five of those early points came from Hubbard, on a 3-pointer created by a patient offensive possession, and a steal and layup. Wagner made a pair of triples in the second. Hubbard scored 12 points in the first half.

Maryland maintained its lead, outscoring the Gophers 25-23 in the third. Bell, who had two points in the first half, tallied nine in the third while Hubbard had seven. Walker-Kimbrough scored 16 for the Terps.

The Gophers’ highest scoring quarter was the 24-point fourth. Wagner had seven of those. Maryland had a game-high 23-point lead in the fourth before Minnesota trimmed the final deficit to 12.

Wagner has 1,597 career points, eighth on Minnesota’s all-time scoring list. Her 206 3-pointers rank fourth, and her 82 3-pointers this season are the third-most in a Gophers’ season.
