Neal Skarr wins wrestling tournament in Iowa

50 years ago: 1967
• Faribault High School won the Region 1 wrestling tournament with 43 points over both Albert Lea and Rochester Mayo by three points. Winning region titles were Tom Fabry at 133 pounds and Chuck Jean at 165 pounds for the Tigers.
• The Albert Lea High School gymnastics team placed second at the Minnesota state tournament with 45.5 points to Minneapolis Marshall’s 68.5 points. Placing for the Tigers were Dave Banks first on the parallel bars, Dave Medd second and Dan Gasco fourth; Dave Vandegrift second on the trampoline, Dan Gasco first on the still rings and Jon Lageson second.
• ALHS graduate Neal Skaar, a senior at Luther College, won the 167-pound title at the Iowa conference wrestling meet.
• Eleven-year-old Susan Westering of Albert Lea, swimming with the Austin YMCA swim team, won the 50 and 100-yard freestyle and the 50-yard backstroke at the Northern District swimming and diving championships.
25 years ago: 1992
• Winners in the 1992 Albert Lea Elks Hoop Shot for the girls were Emily Bernau from Emmons in the 8-9 age, Alyssa Nygaard from Albert lea and Suzy Cipra from Glenville in the 12-13 age. Winners for the boys were Charles Tveite from Albert Lea in the 8-9 age, John Peterson from Albert Lea in the 10-11 age and Chad Karl from Albert Lea in the 12-13 age.
• Winners in the 1992 Albert Lea women’s city bowling tournament were the following; singles-Kelly Johnson, doubles – Charlotte Evlebak and Nancy Houg, actual all-events – Virginia Hanson, handicap-all-events (3-way tie) – Shawn Bolinger, Debbie Rafdal and Bonnie Frazier. The Ladies Masters won the A Team title. Team members were Eunice Beener, Kim Bybee, Shirley Behr and Marilyn Hardies. The team of Judy Anderson, Linda Pobtz, Marsha Rafdal and Lynette Lair bowling for Trumbles won the B team title.

• In the Section 1A hockey title game, ALHS defeated New Ulm 7-1. Casey Woodside scored 3 goals for the Tigers.
• The ALHS boys’ basketball team won its opening round section game 54-50 over Red Wing. A.J. Kortz scored 16 points and Corey Dieser 15 for the Tigers.
