3 A.L. players named to All-Area team

50 years ago: 1967

• The Albert Lea High School basketball team finished the season in second place in the Big Nine Conference with a record of 8-4 and a season record of 14-5. Center Dan Doty led the team with 286 points, followed by Darrel Gavle with 232.

• Coach Don Buhr of the ALHS baseball team greeted eight returning letter winners at the start of practice  They were Doug Johnson, Byran Nelson, John Morley, Larry Rehman, Chuck Slette, Steve Westland, Hollis Grorud and Donn Drommerhausen.

• The Keister High School track coach, Don Albers, opened practice with the following letter winners: Larry Roalstad, Al Hochrieter, Jerry Sabin, Terry Roalstad, Brian Zellar, Mark Obermeyer, Dave Olson, Kirk Fure, Stan Sabin, Larry Card, Craig Hummer, Jerry Flogstad and Paul Trytten. 

• Ken Ullman, the golf coach at ALHS, opened practice with Steve Rheaume as the only returning letter winner.

25 years ago: 1992

• Chosen as the Albert Lea Tribune All-Area Basketball Coach of the Year was Doug Chistopherson of the ALHS team and Chris Boysen of ALHS was named the All-Area Basketball Player of the Year. Named to the Albert Lea Tribune All-Area First Team were Steve Brigger, Paul Kenis and Chris Boysen of ALHS; Ryan Peterson of United South Central and Scott Sommers of NRHEG. Named to the second team were Brian Lease and Jayson Newman of Northwood-Kensett; Darian Baker of NRHEG; Wade Hammer of ALHS; John VanBeek of Glenville-Emmons; and Chris Sorensen of Alden-Conger.

10 years ago: 2007

• Chosen as the Albert Lea Tribune All-Area Basketball Coach of the Year was Marty Cotter of the Iowa state champion Northwood-Kensett team and named Basketball Player of the Year was Dan Bestul of N-K. Named to the All-Area First Team were Dan Bestul and Cody Hanson of N-K; Jarrod Knutson of G-E; Cory Dieser of ALHS; and Chris Yost of USC. Named to the Second Team were A. J. Kortz of ALHS; Brad Kruckeberg and Justin Stieglbauer of NRHEG; Sam Hallman of A-C; and Steve Hengesteg of Lake Mills.
