The Albert Lea boys’ tennis team got its season off to a good start with a 4-3 win on the road against Mankato East on Thursday afternoon.
After losing the first match of the day, the Tigers rebounded to win four of the next six to take the match.
“We won an extremely competitive match against the (Cougars),” Tigers coach Chris Withers said. “(Grant Herfindahl) played the best match of his young varsity career against a great varsity player in Mankato East’s Josh Ovang.”
Herfindahl defeated Ovang by a score of 6-7, (6-8), 6-0, 6-2.
Other winners for the Tigers in doubles were Calen Hoelscher and Michael Savelkoul, 6-3, 6-4; Keith Gryzbowski and Cole Indrelie, 6-3, 6-2; and Sawyer Nelson and Josh Englin, 6-3, 6-2.
“All three doubles’ teams won their matches and that speaks volumes to the hard work the player are putting forth in practice,” Withers said.
Albert Lea will take on Red Wing in its home-opener at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
