The Albert Lea boys’ golf team traveled to Northfield to take on two of the best golf teams in the Big Nine Conference: Northfield and Red Wing.
Albert Lea finished the triangular in third place with a score of 335.
Red Wing won with a score of 316, and Northfield scored a 319.
“We played two of the teams in the Big Nine today,” Tigers coach Max Jeffrey said. “Their scores were very impressive today and just what we expected to see.”
Individually, Albert Lea was led by Bergan Lundak’s 79.
“Bergan has been searching to break 80 in his varsity career and today he did that by shooting 79,” Jeffrey said. “To use the cliche, ‘he got that monkey off his back.’”
Danny Chalmers finished on Lundak’s heels with an 80, including a 36 on the back nine.
“Danny showed resiliency today by shooting an even par on the back (nine),” Jeffrey said.
Marty Syverson (81), Sam Chalmers (91), Logan Howe (91) and Hayden Johnston (102) rounded out the scores for Albert Lea.
It was Howe’s first varsity action of the season, and Jeffrey was impressed.
“He shot 79 in a junior varsity tournament on Friday in Mankato, and his game is coming along,” Jeffrey said.
While the Tigers finished third, Jeffrey was happy with the attitude with which his guys play.
“One thing is for sure, I really like how we carry ourselves on the golf course,” he said. “We do things the right way and that says a lot about the character of our team.”
Albert Lea will be in Le Seuer on Friday.
