Duplicate Bridge Club

Duplicate Bridge Clubresults have been released.

The winners for May 2 were Loren Cleland and Dave Ring, first place; Chuck Borneman and Russ Valle, second place; Gail and Ray Schmidt, third place; Larry Crowe and Bill Momsen, fourth place; Joyce Crowe and Millie Seiver, fifth place; and Barb Engebretson  and Orrin Roisen, sixth place.

Winners for May 3 were Carolyne Higgins and Quenten Fiala, first place; Larry Crowe and Fisher, second place; Dave Ring and Orrin Roisen, third place; Edna Knobbe and Cleo Osmundson, fourth place; and Vandy Newman and Ron Peters, fifth place.

Duplicate Bridge playS at 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays and at noon Wednesdays at the Senior Center in Austin. All bridge players are welcome to attend.

Trinity Lutheran Church Women

The Trinity Lutheran Church Women of Albert Lea salad luncheon took place at noon April 7. Dori Schou played the piano as people arrived. Co-president Linda Olson welcomed everyone.

The Rev. Eileen Woyen shared devotions based on God’s love and loving one another, 1 John 4. Different churches are connected by love. Woyen led the table prayer, “Be present at our table now.” A salad luncheon followed.

Members of Trinity Lutheran Church Women provided salads. There were guests from other churches; 30 churches were invited. The Deborah Circle served the luncheon, with Katie Jacobsen as chairwoman. Shorty Jensen assisted the circle.

Following the luncheon, Jan Drews introduced the program, “Martin Luther, The Catechism and Music” by the Rev. Steven Woyen, husband of Eileen Woyen. The group learned that Luther was very musical. His music of choice was the lute. Luther used music in matters of faith. The group looked at a few songs written by Martin Luther. The role of music in Lutheran Liturgy is to glorify God. The role of the choir is to help out the congregation with music. Luther wrote 60 to 70 songs. It was a very interesting and entertaining program.

Co-president LeAnn Juveland closed the meeting by thanking the circle serving and seeing how many came from other churches.

Announcements were made for the Trinity ladies. There was a reminder about the Lutheran World Relief van coming in May. A thank you was given to the Deborah Circle for hosting.

Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lyle, Steven Woyen’s church, had an Easter vigil the Saturday before Easter. An Easter reception followed afterwards.

The meeting closed with praying the Lord’s Prayer.

Women Veterans  of Freeborn County

The regularly scheduled meeting of the Women Veterans of Freeborn County was at 11:30 a.m. May 3 at American Legion Post No. 56 in Albert Lea.

Women veterans present included Judi Olson, Deanne Luedtke and Joan Paczkowski.

Rick Hobson from Humana Insurance came to invite members of the group to a meeting at 10 a.m. June 6 at American Legion Post No. 56. The topic of discussion at the meeting will be “Your Medicare and VA Options.”

The women veterans conference will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 25 at Ramada Plymouth Hotel in Plymouth. The Women Veteran of the Year award will be presented at that time. Members of the group will check on using the Veterans Administration van and check to find out who the Woman Veteran of the Year will be.

There will be a woman’s veterans gala from 5 to 9 p.m. May 18 at Canadian Hanker Events at Kahler Apache in Rochester. It is a free event for all women veterans.

Information about the art therapy classes was given, but no one expressed interest in the event.

Third of July Parade information was discussed by those present. The group will participate this year and members will receive more information. Luedtke will send in the registration.

Information about the National Association of State Women Veterans conference was discussed. It was decided that the event would be too expensive for the group to take part in.

The Morin Lake Days parade is June 17. The group decided not to support the event this year, but members expressed interest in doing so every other year.

Luedtke shared a list of deceased military personnel who have been buried or cremated in Freeborn County since May 2016. There were 73 names on the list.

The treasurer’s report was given. There were no expenditures for the month.

Luedtke shared two articles with the group.

Paczkowski made a strawberry cake for dessert. She was thanked.

The Women Veterans of Freeborn meet at 11:30 a.m. on the first Wednesday of the month at American Legion Post 56. The group encourages all women military veterans to join them for an informal lunch, discussion and camaraderie. For more information, call Luedtke at 414-530-3982.
