An Albert Lea man was charged with two felonies Tuesday in Freeborn County District Court after allegedly strangling a woman last week.

Carl Preston Douglas, 47, is charged with domestic assault by strangulation and terroristic threats.

Court documents state Douglas was charged after the alleged victim, who was known to Douglas, said he accused her of cheating on him May 24, grabbing her by the throat and squeezing, causing her to have pain in her neck and have trouble breathing. She alleged Douglas threatened to kill her during the incident, and she said there were previous domestic violence incidents.

Douglas reportedly denied any physical altercation, saying there was a verbal argument.

Douglas was previously convicted of physical assault in April 2012.

District Court Judge Steven Schwab set conditional bail for Douglas at $10,000, and Schwab ordered a domestic abuse no-contact order. Douglas’ next court appearance is scheduled for June 8.

Terroristic threats carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Domestic assault by strangulation carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
