To the organizers of the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day.

We have heard many great things about the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day, which took place Wednesday at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds.

The event taught 120 students about safety in several areas, including first aid, grain safety, fire safety and weather safety.

We appreciate those people who volunteered their time to teach, and we hope the knowledge discussed will stick with the students a long time into the future.

We look forward to seeing many more of these events in future years.

To a busy weekend of events in Albert Lea.

Whether you like or dislike classic cars, this weekend in Albert Lea is one of the biggest of the year.

From car shows, to live music, to car cruises to a rock ’n’ roll church service, Eddie Cochran Weekend is one of the city’s biggest events of the year.

The weekend honors Albert Lea native Eddie Cochran, who toured the United States as a country music performer in the 1950s. He made the move to rock ’n’ roll with his “Sitting on the Balcony” hit in 1957, which sold more than 1 million copies. He died on Easter Sunday in 1960 when the cab taking him to Heathrow Airport crashed.

Though it’s a warm weekend, we encourage people to get out and enjoy some of the fun. It’s a good time to get out and mingle.

To the Albert Lea Public Library’s summer reading program.

The Albert Lea Public Library kicked off its summer reading program on Monday, which encourages children to read throughout the summer through various prizes and activites. There are several weeks planned full of special events for children of all ages to enjoy, including a magician, a puppet show and visits from The Zoo Man and the R.A.D. Zoo.

Thanks to the staff at the library who go out of their way to make reading and learning fun for the children of this community. We hope these children will remember their love of reading as they get older.
