GLENVILLE — When disaster strikes, it is vital that first responders maintain reliable and continual communications with one another. The same can be said about agricultural and commercial businesses who value time efficiency.
Com-Tec Land Mobile Radio Service has solutions that will work in each of these arenas.
Founded in 1981 by Wes Webb, the company is an authorized dealer of Motorola and Whelen products, which include two-way radio systems, emergency lights and siren controllers.
As a result, Wes Webb’s son and Com-Tec Operating Manager, Matt Webb, said about 30 to 40 percent of the company’s business is building police vehicles from the ground up. The company installs everything from radio, camera and computer systems to the prisoner partitions.
They also work closely with 911 dispatch centers throughout southern Minnesota and northern Iowa to install, maintain and repair radio communications systems.
Part of the business’ service means being on call at times, but that’s something both Matt Webb and Wes Webb are quite accustomed to. Both men are members of the Glenville Fire Department. Matt Webb started with the department in 2003 and recently became fire chief after serving in the position of assistant chief for five years. Wes Webb, a 34-year veteran of the department, serves as a training officer.
“We understand how public communication systems work,” Matt Webb said.
The two-way radio communication systems they install have applications for both commercial and agricultural businesses as well.
According to Matt Webb, the greatest benefit is that radio communication is constant and immediate. Users of the devices can also speak to multiple people at one time, which increases production time.
The business definitely has its own niche, but it’s not stunting the growth of the company. Due to both the high demand of their work and the desire of the Webbs to expand their coverage area, the company has plans to grow. Matt Webb also plans to take over the company at some point. For now, both his mother and father play an active roles in the business.
Its home, however, will stay where it is. The Webbs had the option of moving elsewhere when a tornado destroyed their business in 2001. Instead of moving, the business was rebuilt in Glenville.
