Minn. Legislature slogs to deadline without deal

ST. PAUL — Minnesota lawmakers were working Saturday with less than three days left in the legislative session, as the Capitol filled with demonstrators on gay marriage and budget cuts.
There was still no budget deal between Republicans who control the Legislature and Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton as of press time for this newspaper.
Budget talks resumed Saturday but legislative leaders reported little progress.
Both House and Senate were holding floor sessions, too.
House leaders haven’t said whether they plan to hold a vote on the gay marriage issue. House approval would be the last step in putting a question on the 2012 ballot asking voters to ban gay marriage in the state’s constitution.
The issue was roiled Friday when a minister known for anti-gay comments delivered a prayer on the House floor. House Speaker Kurt Zellers later apologized.
